As Bence and I were thinking about the beginnings of Cogito, our good friend Karesz Havlik from Diabtrend mentioned something about an Innovation Tender at Semmelweis University with which we could've acquired some capital for launching the project of an all collaborative e-learning platform. We've quickly read through the application form and were absolutely baffled about the so-called Financials part. Calculating budgets, financial returns, debt structures and cost-benefit ratios with impact on student life. We've had no idea about how much it would take to actually develop a platform we imagined. When in doubt, always ask the software engineers, who give you accurate estimations all the time about cost and development time.
So we contacted Kristóf and Máté, two undergrad engineering students from BME whom we've met earlier that year. Before the projects, we've had zero clue about businesses, software or whatsoever that are linked to making a profit, so we've met the guys at a completely random "startup" get together where we told them about our idea between two drinks. Once we read the application, I remembered the guys, and after a short "Hey how's it going" I've sent over the 2-page long specification (years of development plans) to which Kristóf shortly replied: "Maybe we should sit down to talk things through". Little did we know it was the beginning of Cogito. Máté and Kristóf after going through the detailed specification estimated that the project will be around 3 million in HUF and would take some 3-4 months of development (Oh my sweet summer child). We shook hands and told the guys that we'll keep in touch.
Since the application had to contain some further high-level details about the project, and given that we had no clear idea about how the platform should actually work, we didn't apply for the tender after all, but within 2 weeks Kristóf and Máté gathered a team of MVPs with Ádám and Berci getting on board, and we were ready to get deeper into the jungle of startups. Friendships were made and the project started going. This was 2 years ago in October 2017... oh boy the estimation of 3-4 months of development might've been a slight underestimation. Did we regret getting into business together? You bet we didn't, and we won't do it just now. More stories coming soon, so keep tuned in.
